Religion is a product of evolution, software suggests

God may work in mysterious ways, but a simple computer program may explain how religion evolved

By distilling religious belief into a genetic predisposition to pass along unverifiable information, the program predicts that religion will flourish. However, religion only takes hold if non-believers help believers out – perhaps because they are impressed by their devotion.

“If a person is willing to sacrifice for an abstract god then people feel like they are willing to sacrifice for the community,” says James Dow, an evolutionary anthropologist at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, US, who wrote the program – called Evogod (download the code here).

Dow is by no means the first scientist to take a stab at explaining how religion emerged. Theories on the evolution of religion tend toward two camps. One argues that religion is a mental artefact, co-opted from brain functions that evolved for other tasks.
Aiding the people

Another contends that religion benefited our ancestors. Rather than being a by-product of other brain functions, it is an adaptation in its own right. In this explanation, natural selection slowly purged human populations of the non-religious.

“Sometime between 100,000 years ago to the point where writing was invented, maybe about 7000 BC, we begin to have records of people’s supernatural beliefs,” Dow says.

To determine if it was possible for religion to emerge as an adaptation, Dow wrote a simple computer program that focuses on the evolutionary benefits people receive from their interactions with one another.

“What people are adapting to is other people,” he says.
Religious attraction

To simplify matters, Dow picked a defining trait of religion: the desire to proclaim religious information to others, such as a belief in the afterlife. He assumed that this trait was genetic.

The model assumes, in other words, that a small number of people have a genetic predisposition to communicate unverifiable information to others. They passed on that trait to their children, but they also interacted with people who didn’t spread unreal information.

The model looks at the reproductive success of the two sorts of people – those who pass on real information, and those who pass on unreal information.

Under most scenarios, “believers in the unreal” went extinct. But when Dow included the assumption that non-believers would be attracted to religious people because of some clear, but arbitrary, signal, religion flourished.

“Somehow the communicators of unreal information are attracting others to communicate real information to them,” Dow says, speculating that perhaps the non-believers are touched by the faith of the religious.
Ancient needs

Richard Sosis, an evolutionary anthropologist at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, US, says the model adds a new dimension to the debate over how religion could have evolved, which has previously relied on verbal arguments and speculation. But “these are baby steps”, he cautions.

Sosis previously found that in some populations – kibbutzim in Israel, for instance – more religious people receive more assistance from others than the less faithful. But he notes that the forces that maintain religion in modern humans could be very different from those that promoted its emergence, thousands of years ago.

Palaeolithic humans were probably far more reliant than modern humans on the community they were born into, Sosis says. “[Now] you can be a Lutheran one week and decide the following week you are going to become a Buddhist.”

Quran Vs. Muslim behaviour

The BBC reported:

Danish cartoons ‘plotters’ heldDanish police have arrested three people suspected of planning to attack a cartoonist who drew caricatures satirising the Prophet Muhammad.

Intelligence agents said two Tunisians and a Dane of Moroccan origin had been arrested in Aarhus at 0330 GMT “to prevent a murder linked to terrorism”.

The editor of the newspaper that first published the caricatures said he had been deeply shaken by news of the plot.

The pictures printed by Jyllands-Posten sparked violent protests two years ago.

Danish embassies were attacked around the world and dozens died in riots.

‘Concrete plans’

In a statement, the head of the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET), Jakob Sharf, said its operatives had carried out pre-dawn raids in the Aarhus region.

The detentions of the three suspects had been made “after lengthy surveillance”, he added.

The Danish citizen will be released pending further investigation, while the Tunisians will be held until they are expelled from the country.

The PET did not identify the target of the alleged plot, but the online edition of Jyllands-Posten said its cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard, was the focus.

The newspaper, based in Aarhus, said Mr Westergaard, 73, and his 66-year-old wife, Gitte, had been under police protection for the past three months.

In a statement on Jyllands-Posten’s website, Mr Westergaard said: “Of course I fear for my life when the police intelligence service say that some people have concrete plans to kill me.

“But I have turned fear into anger and resentment.”

The editor of Jyllands-Posten, Carsten Juste, said he and his staff had been “deeply shaken” by the news.

“We’d become more or less used to death threats and bomb threats since the cartoons, but it’s the first time that we’ve heard about actual murder plans – that’s new,” he said.

Muslim anger

The BBC’s Thomas Buch-Andersen in Copenhagen says the arrests have stunned people in Denmark, where the furore over the cartoons was thought to have passed.

Mr Westergaard was one of 12 artists behind the drawings but he was responsible for what was considered the most controversial of the pictures.

The caricature featured the head of Islam’s holiest prophet with a turban depicting a bomb with a lit fuse.

The cartoons were later reprinted by more than 50 newspapers, triggering a wave of protests in parts of the Muslim world.

The demonstrations culminated a year ago with the torching of Danish diplomatic offices in Damascus and Beirut and dozens of deaths in Nigeria, Libya and Pakistan.

————————————————————————————

Although I believe it is a crime to attack people’s beliefs in any form, change must come through debate, not ridicule. It can in no way be accepted that the cartoonist receive deaththreats or any other form of violence. This goes directly against the Quran:

5:32 On that account, We decreed to the Children of Israel (the Eternal Moral Ordinance for all humanity 2:178) that whoever kills a human being, unless it be for murder or bloody crimes on the earth, it would be as if he killed all mankind. And whoever saves one life it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. And Our messengers came to them with evident truth, yet, even after this, many of them continue to commit
excesses in the land.

These people act directly the opposite of the Quran. The Quran never says to kill or harm anyone that offends Islam or the Quran or the Prophet. Although many people, Muslim or non-Muslim, have the idea that the Quran is agressive towards opponents but the text shows the opposite and this concept of violence and hate can not be found anywhere in the text. The Quran only allows self-defence in the case of war against the assautling army but never aggression nor revenge against non-Muslims. Sadly Muslims have fallen into a victim-psychology where they ignore the Quranic text and try to justify aggression and hatred using dubious historical texts as Hadith, which have been mostly written 200 years after the Prophet Muhammed, or base it purely on the commands of certain radical scholars in the past and present

Instead of reforming their socio-economical and political situations themselves, they blame their low status and oppression mostly on the Western powers which came to dominate them in the 19th and 20th century. This blame is mostly unjustified, as although the occupations were wrong, the Western countries only took advantage of the already present weakness among the Muslim people which was formed through the allowed abuse by their leaders and clergy.

This victim attitude combined with the anger created through the oppression in Palestine has allowed a very aggressive and untolerant version of Muslim attitude to emerge and to influence all sects in Islam in one way or another.

This is in a sense the root cause of the wrongs commited by Muslims in this day and age.

The riots and now this murder plot against a person who has “insulted” Islam through drawing some cartoons is a result of the above mentioned factors. But these behaviours and violations go directly against the Quranic message.

When it comes to insulting Islam or Muslims:

28:55 (Additionally) whenever they hear vain talk of ridicule, they
withdraw from it decently and say, “To us our deeds and to you yours;
Peace be upon you, we do not seek to join the ignorant.”25:63 The true servants of the Beneficent are those who walk upon the
earth humbly, and when the ignorant ones address them, they say,
“Peace!”

The above 2 verses give a very clear command on how to act when being confronted by insults or ridicule.

Even when we look at the historical records concerning the Prophet Muhammed, sources that are deemed by most Muslim sects as having as much authority as the Quran itself although they are written 200 years after the Prophet, a very clear picture emerges where he upheld the above verses during his whole life. When he was confronted with insults and ridicule, he never turned aggressive nor took revenge on the people. He remained peacefull and polite to them, even after he had risen in power.

The riots that destroyed a Danish Embassy is also a clear violation against the Quranic message as the Quran says:

53:38-39
- i That no laden one shall bear the load of another.
- ii And that every human being shall be responsible for, and
compensated for, his labor.

So Denmark and agencies and people coming from Denmark can never be held responsible for the deeds of a fellow countryman. This also counts for the decision made by a government, which the citizens cannot be held responsible for.

It is thus clearly shown that both the murder plot and the riots are non-Islamic behaviours and do not reflect the Quranic message but the delussion and rejection of the Quranic message by the Muslims themselves.

The mistakes on Geert Wilders by the foreign media-My reflections

By Arnold Mol

I have been reading some foreign news articles about Geert Wilders and it astonishes me every time how little people know about the real situation in Holland.

Let me quote the first sentence from an article who starts with:

“Geert Wilders, the popular MP”.

Popular with whom? Wilders is far from popular in Holland. Many people see him as a childish hatemongering man who has no real contribution to Holland. He got so many votes in the last election as Rita Verdonk, minister of Integration, wasn’t party leader of the Liberal right VVD party.

This caused many voters to end up at Wilders, but many of them later regretting the vote. There are many factors involved that caused his so-called popularity, and this is mainly because of the internal struggle within the VVD party.

Last November finally a break emerged within the VVD and Rita Verdonk created her own party “Trots op Holland”, meaning “Proud of Holland”. She is mostly concerned with people abusing the liberty given to migrate to Holland by mainly Moroccan and Turkish families. She raised the bars of integration higher then was ever before and made sure Moroccan and Turkish families could not easily import new husbands and wives to Holland for their children.

One of the biggest problems in Holland had emerged around men and women imported straight from the mountain villages to marry a Dutch-born Moroccan or Turkish male or female. They didn’t invest in learning Dutch, nor were educated in Dutch values. This caused also many differences and problems with the straight-from-the-village husbands and their Dutch-born liberal highly educated wives. A clash which is of course completely understandable.

This is what Rita Verdonk focuses on. If you want to “import” a wife or husband. The person must first learn the Dutch language, values and history in their home country and the person must prove it can find a job immediately and not just jump straight into welfare.

Although many Muslims acted as if this was an attack on Islam, as it took away the power to pre-arrange marriages, this was a great blessing for many Dutch-born liberal Muslim women who belong to the largest group of highly educated women of all minorities in Holland. Now they would not be “matched up” that easily with a never-educated nephew straight from the mountain villages.

This is what most Dutch people really care about. That people do not abuse the freedom to immigrate to Holland and abuse the welfare system. As sadly, the Moroccans are the largest percentage of all minorities who make use of the welfare system, and are also the largest group who are frequently caught abusing it.

Geert Wilders only really started making his anti-Islamic rantics after he was elected. Before the election he had never said such radical things as destroy and ban the Koran and throw out the Muslim population, so many of the people who voted for him were shocked as for them it was more about cleaning away the abusing of the welfare and get the minorities better integrated. But he has also attracted a new crowd behind him.

Now suddenly it turned out they had voted on a mini-me version of Hitler. This is why Wilders will evetually lose power and votes in the new election. His rantics are harming the economy. Many highly educated young Muslims born in Holland are immigrating to Morocco or Turkey as they feel Holland is losing its values. Holland has turned in the world media from the most liberal country in the world to an Islam-hating country.

Yes, there are many misunderstandings about Islam within Holland, as it is in almost every Western country. But this makes many people not hate Islam, but the wrongs things that are committed in its name. Be it terrorism, abuse of wives, lack of education, superstition and lack of progress concerning democracy or freedom of people. But this is also hated by many Muslims who reflect on the old Muslim states who were the pinnacles of freedom and knowledge in the Middle Ages and the social message found in the Koran and early Islamic history. So this is a battle that must be fought together with Muslims, as the demand for reform within Islam is growing in large numbers day by day.

When it comes too Wilders, people must first know he doesn’t know anything about the Koran. He maybe has read a few books by Islam-haters here and there. But when it really comes too mentioning verses, he will fail immediately as he has done many times in the Dutch media when asked about which verses should be banned. During these debates on Dutch TV, it is never Wilders himself sitting there. No, it is mostly a reformist-protestant Dutch Arabist professor who is really selective in what to quote from the Koran, Wilders is not the mind behind this campaign but a few people with a certain anti-Islam agenda who whisper in his ear. It is better to see him as the Dutch parliament version of Bush, quick to repeat the whispers and shout them out in the most radical form, but having no real knowledge on the matter of his own. The only thing Wilders will have contributed to his movie will be the propaganda and his name below the title, do not expect more to come from the brain beneath the blond bleached waves.

The Wilders fire will die out soon and he knows this, so he is using every scrap of time he has to do as much damage as possible.

In the Netherlands we have a different groups of immigrants then for example in America. Most of them were selected in Morocco and Turkey and then shipped over to Holland to work in the factories in the 1960’s. Many of these laborers came from the poor regions of the countries, had little education and were mostly from the Berber or Kurdish regions.

They always had the idea they would only stay in Holland for a couple of years and then go back with the money to build a house or a farm, but as the economy in Morocco was growing worse and the racism towards non-Arabs, they stayed. This went on and on, and before they knew it, they were stuck here in Holland. As the Dutch government also thought the laborers would go back, they never invested in any integration projects or teach them the language.

Between the 80 and 90’s many of the wives and families of the laborers were shipped over to Holland. Hundreds of thousands of people who grew up in mountain villages with strong traditions and little education suddenly ended up in one of the most liberal countries in the world.

In Europe we always focus on how hard it is for us to deal with the ‘foreigners’, but for them it must have been a much harder culture shock.

In the mountains a social structure had emerged over the thousands of years with strict hierarchies and ways of family structure to survive in these hard and unforgiving surroundings. This is where pre-arranged marriages come from. To create certainty of survival, it is important you can predict as many factors as possible in your surroundings, you must control as many as you can.

This is why in tribes people are married only to other tribal people as your nephew is predictable, he knows his place within the social structure, he has a emotional bloodline connection and he is used to listening to you. In the mountains you cannot ask for a better husband for your daughter.

We in the West are easy in condemning pre-arranged marriages, but for them it is survival, not egoism.

But suddenly, people with this strict social structure in their mind ended up in the liberal individualistic societies of the West. It is logical the first generations cannot adapt that fast. Mostly it will not go beyond the wives being allowed to go to the market, a thing which is a male duty in the mountains as it is to dangerous for women to just go alone.

The second generations were more liberal, but in a sense were living in 2 worlds. In Holland when they went outside to school or play. But experienced the strict social structure when at home or family.

Many of these ended up in an identity crisis, when this happens, it is easier for the psyche to choose the more stricter outlined way of thinking. And so the strict social structure was upheld.

This is also by the way why many young Muslims are attracted to the strict hardliner Wahabi Islam as it sets out hard strict clear lines of what is Islam. For young Muslims this is very attractive as it creates a stabile support in a confusing world.

The third generation is mostly for 60-80% liberal Dutch then really Moroccan. But they are still under the supervision of the 2nd generation strict social structure which doesn’t approve of this liberal thinking. And so the family mostly chooses to inter-marriage the 3rd generation with nephews and cousins to keep them in control.

But also because of losing social connections with the family in Morocco, Holland and other parts of Europe where family members have immigrated to, an urge to re-unite them through marriage is also sought.

The 3rd generation is also in a larger identity crisis then the 2nd, as in Morocco they are not accepted as Moroccans but seen as Dutch, and in Holland they are seen as Moroccans.

What are they then? This creates a lot of frustration among many youths, and this is also why some choose the Wahabi Islam instead of the Berber Maliki Islam of their parents.

It is a way to rebel against the family, the West and to have a feeling that atleast God is accepting you.

Mohammed B. who killed the director Theo van Gogh a couple of years ago was such a youth. Highly educated, very social, but then couldn’t find a job. Was dissatisfied with the passiveness of the family’s way of thinking. His identity suppressed by the Moroccan and Dutch society and his Muslim identity suppressed by seeing misery in the Muslim world and oppression in Iraq and Palestine.

And then suddenly a man makes a movie attacking the Quran and saying the Prophet was a child molester.

This was the finally push that made him go over the edge and kill Van Gogh in the brutal way he did.

All of these circumstances are ignored by people as Wilders and Hirshi Ali. They abuse the weak position many 1st and 2nd generations are in as they were never educated. How can they defend themselves against professors and politicians?
And the 3rd generation is busy to find steady ground for their identity.

It is an easy group to pick on….

This is why it is important educated Muslims who have a good insight in Islam, and thank God there are many emerging in Holland, are creating information platforms that present an alternative to Wahabism and the superstitious Islam of the 1st generations.

Arnold, from Granada I largerly agree with you view on “Wilders” as a phenomenon. Having read this morning (20.3.08) that the Min of Justice, Hirsch Ballin, is concerned about national security issues and too much secret service involvement required to gauge the “Wilders Effects”, I would propose to silence Wilders and check upon his psychic disorder(s) by some psychiatrists. The man must be ill. Its a crackpot and a shame for Holland and its parliamentary system! Wilders misuses “freedom of expression” to stir up emotions in an uncontrollable way (soon), damaging Dutch interests worldwide. A serious case for the secret services dealing with this sort of people. However, this doesn’t effectively work for strange reasons! Next to such action of silencing Wilders the general public must be educated about the lifestyle(s) of Islam and leave the false impression that Islam is a religion! That is tmho the crux of things… Yahia

I personally do not completely agree with silencing Wilders (silencing of course does not mean killing him, just taking away his public speaking rights). Wilders attacking Islam is in itself nothing wrong with. What is wrong, is that he does not believe a moderate Islam exists or is possible, and he presents a violent interpretation of the Quran, which is only upheld by no more then 5-10% of all Muslims, as the dominant and only possible interpretation.

This generalizing is taking away any credit he had. The “war” verses in the Quran are balanced by the peace verses, which only allows war in self-defense, against oppression (4:75), aggression is not allowed, non-combatans may not be harmed and when peace is possible, it must be accepted or offered. In the past certain Muslim rulers have tried to overrule the peace verses by saying they were abrogated by the war verses, but this only worked with a few. Today’s terrorists and extremists use the same tactic by claiming the peace verses are abrogated.

The Muslim majority do not accept this violent interpretation and thus should also not feel they are addressed by Wilders. Sadly, Muslim political leaders and religious leaders like to riot their people. When people react violent, like for example with the riots of the Denmark cartoons, it says more about their frustrated life situation, their social situation, then their anger about the cartoons. As you cannot convince me that those mobs that attacked the Danish ambassies consisted of succesful businessmen…

And this is the main problem, Muslim populations live in hard social situations and as they cannot channel their anger against the Muslim religious leaders as this would be seen as blasphemous, and they cannot fight their oppressive and corrupt governments, they atleast can channel their anger at the “infidel” West.

People like Wilders know this and try to abuse this to make their case in presenting Islam as violent. No, Islam is not violent, Muslim populations are frustrated about their social situations.

Pay close attention to WHERE people riot, and I can tell their social situation is bad or oppressive. You never hear about riots in Muslim countries as for example Senegal.

To get back to the movie, anything Wilders will present has already been written down by anti-Islam books in the last 400 years. He will say nothing, NOTHING, new. Robert Spencer has written several books that say the same thing as Wilders, but no one has rioted over this. The difference thus here, is that a politician makes the same statement, and thus seemingly reflect the belief of a whole nation (Holland in this case).

The movie will be only 15 minutes said Wilders. Interesting, as he claimed that 80-90% of the Quran is violent, meaning around 6000 verses, and he can tackle 6000 verses in 15 minutes? You can already see the hypocrisy here.

He will probably show people being stoned, a practice which is nowhere to be found in the Quran, it is a Jewish law taken over by Muslim judges in the middle ages, and stoning is only done is some tribal areas where no government has control, and only in 3 Muslim countries, I repeat 3 Muslim countries of the 48, accept stoning as punishment.

So this is not an Islamic law accepted by the majority of Muslim countries and finnaly many voices start to spring up seeing this is a non-Quranic law.

Then of course come the war verses, and he will of course avoid mentioning the peace verses that restrict war, just as terrorists do. If the majority of Muslims really believed in the violent interpretation of the Quran, why do 1.2 Billion Muslims attack the West? Why are there only a few hundred extremists here and there to be found? Because only a minority of a minority believes in violence.

Then he will probably mention that the Quran allows beating wives (4:34), a traditional interpretation of the word Daraba which has more then a 100 meanings in Classic Arabic, and this meaning is or abrogated by tradition or it is not accepted as the word Daraba can also mean to leave the wives, not to beat them. Many Quran translations and commentators have expressed this. So, again, it cannot be claimed by him that the Quran says this, he can only claim that this is AN interpretation upheld by some.

Then will come probably the verses that say that Muslims cannot take Jews and Christians as their Whaly(meaning collegeas/friends/protectors). This verse doesn’t say Muslims cannot take Christians and Jews as friends, the verses address the Muslim governments not be dependent of Christian and Jewish nations but to be self-sufficient. So again, Wilders can only address AN interpretation but cannot claim it is THE interpretation.

It is interesting how Wilders has created more unity in Holland between Muslim, Jewish and Christian organisations. It has forced moderate Muslims to stop being silent and speak up and show violent Muslims go against Islam and the Quran. A famous Dutch-Jewish tv personality had bought the front-page of a famous Dutch newspaper and had printed in bold big letters: Wilders is facist and is creating a new form of anti-semitism against Muslims.

Who would ever guessed Wilders would get the Jews after him? :-)

And then you have of course Mohammed the pervert and pedophile. The historical records that say Mohammed married a 9 year old girl are dubious and there are many other historical records that claim her to be 18, 29 and even 48. Which record do we accept? Again Wilders will not address the truth about Muhammed, he will only address A historical record. As for the multiple wives, although I believ emany of these historical records are dubious, even those say that of the 13 wives, all of them were old, most above 40-60 and all were widows. He didn’t marry them for pleasure, but for social help and protection.

One of the main Wilder supporters in the academic world is Prof. Hans Jansen. Although I do respect his knowledge, his concept of the Quran proclaiming violence and this reflected in the Muslim world and their anti-Western attitude is a very short insight into the whole problem. Many Muslim countries are anti-Western because they used to be colonies of the West.

In Indonesia and Suriname, old Dutch colonies, native people hated Dutch people. This had nothing to do with their faith, but with their history. The same accounts for African-Americans who still have a difficult position in America, and this can be seen for example in the Black preacher that supported Barack Obama. he held a very racist speech against white Americans. And Obama correctly said that this reflected more the anger still present in the Black community. Or do we start claiming Christianity preaches racism?

We must use the same logic with Muslim nations where much anti-Western thoughts are remnants of the colonial days.

Muslims must reform themselves and let go of Taqlid, blind following of their leaders and tradition. The Quran is unbelievable in its wideness of understanding life and social issues. But when the interpretation is limited to a 9-14th century understanding which was created under monarch rule, then Islam will be handicapted in freeing the Muslims from their social problems in their societies. And then they will confirm what God already had mentioned:

وقال الرسول يا رب ان قومي اتخذوا هذا القرانمهجورا25:30 And in the Messenger will say: Oh my Developer of all stages of Evolution! My own people have made the Quran mahjoor, binding their understanding so the potentials of its Message will be of no account which will cause them to leave it.

[Mahjoor= A sheep or cow bounded with a rope on its horn/snout and frontleg, so the animal could only limp around, but not run away. Thus making the animal of no account so it could be left behind. In the same way is the Quran bounded by religious interpretations made under monarch rule which have bounded the Quranic potential and made the Quran of no account so it is left behind by mankind.]
